About Jane

As much painter as photographer, Jane Gottlieb has used her explosive colorist skills for the past twenty-five years to hand-paint layers of retouching dyes onto her Cibachrome prints, altering reality into a more romantic and optimistic world.  She pushes the photograph beyond a believable paradise. “I hope” says Gottlieb, “to create images that surprise and intrigue, drawing the viewer into my idyllic vision, ultimately uplifting them with vibrant color and evocative beauty.”

Over her career, Gottlieb has journeyed to destinations throughout the world taking photographs of the natural and man-made world creating the basis for her intensified compositions.

From her multiple series that range from classic automobiles to architecture to gardens, this exhibit primarily shows the constructed world:  perception enhancing cityscapes, monuments, and villas.

It was in the early 1980s Gottlieb created her signature art form of vibrant hand-painted photographs.  Soon after, she received a solo exhibit at the Laguna Beach Museum of Art and was able to concentrate full time on her fine art career.

Subsequently Gottlieb has been exhibited worldwide.  Her artwork has been in many one-person shows including at:  The Butler Institute of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Laband Art Gallery at Loyola Marymount University, Petersen Automotive Museum, Monterey Museum of Art, Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, CA, Louis Stern Gallery in Los Angeles, Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York and L’Image Gallery in Rome.

 Artist’s Statement

I have been expressing my joy of art with paint, shapes and colors since I was very young.  I began as a painter, evolved into a photographer, and eventually began painting on my photographic prints over thirty years ago.  I hand painted vivid colors on my Cibachrome prints, creating a wonderful new reality.  Now I scan my one-of-a-kind hand-painted prints, enhance them with Photoshop and produce limited edition archival ink-jet prints.

“Color is luscious to me.  It’s a luxury to be able to fill my life with color. Color is energy; it’s feeling. It’s the other side of intellectual, and it makes you feel good—it really does pick you up. And it makes people smile.”
