ABOUT ANDREA

“There is only one way to see things, until someone shows us how to look at them with different eyes”  ― Pablo Picasso

Andrea Nungurrayi Martin has been a great friend over the years. We've shared a few memorable adventures together. She has a great sense of humor and she's game for anything.

Andrea's a second-generation indigenous Australian painter, her father Sampson, who taught her how to paint, grew up out bush and was of the first generation to paint “Dreaming” Mythologies on canvas back in the 70’s and 80’s. The combination of her artistic talent, adventurous spirit, and personable nature have allowed her to take advantage of many opportunities to travel and work outside her remote desert community home of Yuendumu in Australia’s Northern Territory. Whenever an opportunity came my way to promote an indigenous Australian artist in the U.S. Andrea was one of the first artist’s who came to mind.

In 1999 Andrea was an Artist in Residence at San Francisco’s de Young Museum during the exhibition Spirit Country. In 2001 she gave a demonstration of her painting style at Songlines Aboriginal Art in San Francisco. Although a tad shy in front of a crowd, Andrea graciously explained what the symbols meant in her painting and how the iconography tells a “dreaming” story that connects her to places and natural resources in her “traditional” country out bush. The video below was shot during her 2001 trip to San Francisco.
